Pharmacogenomics (PGx)

Pharmacogenomics is the study of how genes affect a person’s response to drugs. This relatively new field combines pharmacology (the science of drugs) and genomics (the study of genes and their functions) to develop effective, safe medications and doses that will be tailored to a person’s genetic makeup.

Many drugs that are currently available are “one size fits all,” but they don’t work the same way for everyone. It can be difficult to predict who will benefit from a medication, who will not respond at all, and who will experience negative side effects (called adverse drug reactions). Adverse drug reactions are a significant cause of hospitalizations and deaths in the United States. With the knowledge gained from the Human Genome Project, researchers are learning how inherited differences in genes affect the body’s response to medications. These genetic differences will be used to predict whether a medication will be effective for a particular person and to help prevent adverse drug reactions.

Cancer Screening

Genetics can help you tell your risk for getting cancer. Study of inherited traits, such as hair or eye color, that are passed from one generation to the next through genes. Your risk for certain cancers can be inherited, or passed through your genes. The test for the BRCA1 and BRCA2 genes is a genetic test that can help to predict your risk for getting breast or ovarian cancer. Once you know your genetic risk for cancer, you can take steps to lower that risk, such as making lifestyle changes.

Women’s Health

According to the World Health Organization, two of the most common cancers affecting women are breast and cervical cancers. Worldwide, cervical cancer is the third most common cancer among women and the second most frequent cause of cancer-related death, accounting for nearly 300,000 deaths annually. The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) estimates that nearly 20 million new sexually transmitted infections (STIs) occur every year in the United States. Researchers estimate

That HPV is responsible for more than 30,000 cases of cancer each year, including nearly all cases of cervical and anal cancer, about 75% of vaginal cancer, 70% of oropharynx cancer, and 69% of vulvar cancer.

Traditionally, vaginal infections are diagnosed using a combination of gynecological examination methods often including a vaginal pH test, a microscopic evaluation (gram-stain and/or wet mount), and an amine order test. However, such procedures have an approximately 30% chance of failure and cannot detect common, mixed infections.
